Swiss fitness market: More fitness centers, members, and revenue

The Swiss health and fitness industry is demonstrating its strength. After double-digit growth last year, it is achieving record results in the number of facilities, members, and revenue. Since 2021, the economic situation has also never been better. This is the conclusion of the fourth comprehensive study on the key data of the Swiss fitness industry, presented by the industry association swiss active.

Together with the German University of Prevention and Health Management (DHfPG) and, most recently, the SAFS School of Movement and Health Management in Zurich, swiss active has comprehensively collected key data on the Swiss fitness industry for the fourth time. The result is a representative quantitative study that creates market transparency. The cut-off date was December 31, 2024.

The results are encouraging for the industry: Key parameters such as the number of members and centers, revenue, and check-ins are all pointing upwards. The number of members increased again by 4.7% in 2024, although it had already grown by double digits in the two previous years. A total of 1.37 million people are members of a fitness center – approximately one in six adults. Among the particularly relevant target group between 15 and 65, this figure rises to one in five.

The Swiss population continues to be more fitness-savvy than that of neighboring countries: 15.2% have a membership in a health/fitness center. In Germany, the figure is only 13.8%, and in Austria, 13.9%. The number of centers continues to grow: after an increase of 5% in the previous year, it now stands at 3.5%. Although there are more establishments, they are also visited more frequently. Members in Switzerland train an average of 1.4 times per week, and fitness is a lifestyle, especially for young people. The number of members under 20 has been growing steadily for years. Marcus Schwedhelm, President of swiss active, commented:

"People in Switzerland have recognized the importance of fitness and exercise. 1.37 million active members, a new record, impressively demonstrates this. The number of fitness centers also continues to grow across all market segments. The average training frequency is higher than ever, and awareness of physical activity and prevention is firmly anchored in many people's everyday lives."

At CHF 1.3 billion, industry revenue is 7.6% higher than the previous year. Because membership fees remained virtually unchanged, more expensive providers in particular were able to attract new members. This is consistent with the fact that personal training, which tends to be more expensive, is becoming increasingly popular. 85.9% of operators rate their financial situation as good or fairly good. This is by far the highest figure since 2021. This is consistent with the extent of the investments planned for 2025: At CHF 249 million, this is a whopping 28% higher than the amount invested in the industry in 2024.

swiss active President Marcus Schwedhelm:

"The economic sentiment in the industry is extremely positive, the willingness to invest is high, and confidence in the future is strong."
